Bill Clinton, in addition to being president has also been made symbolic head of the Boy Scouts. We urge Bill Clinton to resign from any position as leader of the Boy Scouts for moral reasons. Bill Clinton is tacitly approving of an organization that discriminates against gays and nonbelievers in a deity. It is ethically unacceptable for the President
of the United States to do this. The President is the executive head of the American government, a government of all the people. President Clinton should therefore resign as symbolic head of the Boy Scouts of America. Further, all future presidents should do the same, until such time as the Boy Scouts change their policies.
A ruling made by the Supreme Court last month allows the Boy Scouts to discriminate against gays, by virtue of the fact that the Boy Scouts are a private organization. By the same logic, the BSA is also allowed to discriminate against those who don't believe in gods. This would include the members of Freethinkers of Upstate New York. We support the
right of the Boy Scouts to exclude whomever they wish from their membership. However, there is a cost associated with such exclusion, or at least there should be. We think that cost should be the end to any and all government endorsement and support. By having the president also serve as the symbolic head of the Boy Scouts the message is clear: Discrimination against non-believers has the sanction of the federal government. We regard this as both unconstitutional and immoral.
