Support The Day That Counts

I urge all of the nonreligious community of upstate NY to support The Day That Counts, which is Tuesday July 17, 2001.  This day has been set aside for all freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and humanists to speak together with one voice to oppose president Bush's so-called "faith based initiatives" that will amount to a religious tax on all Americans.

Last Tuesday, I spoke at the National Press Club in Washington, during a press conference on The Day That Counts. As one of over a dozen freethought leaders addressing the threat of "faith-based initiatives", I spoke for all those in the upstate NY region who feel that religion and government should not become even more entangled.

I think it is important for all Americans to realize that the separation of church and state is a vital issue in our democracy.  We can not allow our elected officials to tamper with this essential aspect of our nation. No one should be compelled to support a religious organization they do not agree with. Even some religious fundamentalists that I have spoke with see the danger in this.  I therefore urge you to visit our website at www.funygroup.org to see how you can send a message to our elected officials in Washington letting them know how you feel on this issue.  Thank you.
