‘Pledge' is to country, not religion

By Jerry Boehm

It never ceases to amaze me how people can fake false statements and then sit back as if they’ve proven their position. Case in point: Tim Fake’s March 28 letter, in which he said, “A pledge that has a country’s people pledging their loyalty to a deity does not belong in schools.”

Perhaps Mr. Fake needs to slow down and listen to the Pledge of Allegiance once again. It does not have people “pledging their loyalty to a deity” as he suggests.

Rather, it would have us “pledge allegiance to the flag… and to the Republic for which it stands.” The rest of the words in the Pledge just clarify what our great nation is all about.

I will remind Mr. Fake that our Founding Fathers established this country on principle of faith in God. The Declaration of Independence mentions God, Creator, and Supreme Judge of the World. The First Amendment tot the Constitution states that Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion.

Our Constitution was intended to insure freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. And in this democracy, the majority of us are just fine with the phrase “under God” in the Pledge.

Religion isn't so irrational to all
