My twice great grandfather, the Honorable John Bassett Alley, four term US Cogressman from MA in 35th through 39th Congresses, was a long time business associate of Colonel Ingersoll's. In our family papers we have many many letters, stock certificates, photos (a few), etc. of their joint ventures including cattle, railroads, Louisiana swamp lands, etc. Of particular interest are 1880's photos of the Dorsey Ranch and the Ingersoll Ranch in NM. Had the pleasure of visiting the present owner of the Dorsey ranch about 1 1/2 years ago. Made part of my history come alive again for me.

Addition to posting of M. Horner of 05/23/2004. Loew's Vendome did not actually burn until the early morning hours of Aug. 9, 1967, not 1962 as in the previous posting.

I'm 54 years old and have only recently discovered this man's writings. It's sad that such a wonderful human being and his thoughts are not promoted more.
If his works replaced the religious drivel most of us have been force fed since we were old enough to listen, we'd have a lot fewer messed up people today and probably a much better world.
I look forward to reading more of his works and incorporating them into my life as much as I can.

Correction to a post by Johnny D. Walker on 4/3/03. The Loew's Vendome was never renamed the Loew's Cinema. It was not torn down. It burned down on a Thursday night in 1962. The next day the newspaper ads proclaimed "'The Dirty Dozen' held over for a 2nd HOT week'.
Later, the Loew's Corporation announced plans for a grand new theater. Alas, the plan never materialized.
A parking garage was built on the site instead. Later, a downtown mall was built on the site. It never succeeded financially. It is now, as Walker notes, the site of the massive Nashville Public Libaray Main branch.

I have copies from microfilm of reports on Ingersoll's lectures in Nashville and Chattanooga, Tenn. in 1894. In Nashville he spoke at the old Vendome Theatre which later became Loew's Cinema, torn down in the 1960's. I find great satisfaction knowing that where Ingersoll spoke in Nashville is now the location of the new downtown Nashville Public Library.

Great resource! Keep up the good work!
I was introduced to Ingersoll by my grandfather, Arthur Cromwell, longtime president of the Rochester, NY Society of Freethinkers, who was involved early on in the attempts to preserve the Ingersoll House in Dresden, NY.

I became interested in Colonel Ingersoll because of his influence on Carl Graham Fisher, founder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, leader of the first coast to coast highways, and the developer of Miami Beach. I am researching Fisher's life as part of the work I am doing to produce a book on early American auto racing.

Thank you for this wonderful addition to Ingersoll scholarship. I have collected Ingersoll materials for many years, and have often wished for just this kind of data base.
